Description

Kol Aj Side Table
In 1912, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque introduced papier collé to modern art, the technique of collaging everyday materials directly onto the canvas, layering planes of color and texture into a single composition. This gesture of assembling fragments into a unified whole became one of the foundational principles of Cubist collage art.
The Kol Aj Side Table by Malabar translates this collage principle into stone. Part of the Future Classics Collection, the table features a circular top composed of solid marble blocks, terracotta, travertine, and rosso levanto, joined along soft, organic curves reminiscent of hand-cut paper shapes. Rather than replicating the geometric fragmentation of Cubist painting, the tabletop reinterprets collage through fluid, biomorphic forms, echoing the free-flowing cut-outs of Picasso and Braque’s later collage work.
The Kol Aj Side Table conical base is crafted from alternating strips of natural oak and smoked walnut wood, creating a striped, sculptural silhouette that grounds the fluid marble composition above. This contrast between the organic marble top and the structured, banded base reflects the same tension between fragmentation and unity found throughout the Future Classics Collection.
The Kol Aj Side Table joins the Kol Aj Dining Table and the Ih Maj In Cabinet in Malabar’s Future Classics Collection, a series of art-inspired furniture pieces translating 20th-century painting techniques, Cubism, collage, and abstraction, into contemporary, handcrafted furniture for art-filled living and dining spaces.
The Wanderlust Side Table, inspired by such project, features a variety of pipes in polished brass and walnut root that carry an artificial yet natural flair into any luxury interior space bringing a piece of art in your room.
